Upgrading an obsolete or overloaded electrical panel has many advantages. Including but not limited  to safety and convenience.
In regards to safety an electrical panel upgrade can bring your house up to stringent electrical code. This is a plus when insuring your home. Insurance companies have been known to demand an up to code electrical panel before issuing an insurance policy.
 
In safety on fuses over circuit breakers:
when replacing fuses the electrical connections are left open to potential electrical hazards such as electrical shock o even electrocution. People have been known to replace fuses whose rating is higher then intended on the circuit thus putting the house in potential electrical hazard. Circuit breakers leave no open electrical connections and since it can be reset there is no danger of replacing with wrong size circuit breaker.
A ”blown” fuse may sometimes be difficult to see whereas a ”tripped” circuit breaker can be easily identified. No trips to hardware store to buy additional fuses.

In a short circuit the ‘’hot’’ has become grounded for some reason. Often times when driving a nail or screw into a wall it has been driven thru the romex. What the nail or screw can do is drive thru the soft plastic sheath of the romex and thru the plastic jacket of the hot wire.

This tearing of the plastic jacket that protects the wire allows contact between the hot wire and the ground or neutral. This condition can be described as a short circuit.
In an overload it can be as simple as reducing the current demand and replacing the blown fuse or resetting of the circuit breaker. Downey Electricians
